View Full Version : Number of allowed installs

Hey everybody!

I just recently donated $20 and am waiting for my account to be upgraded. In the meantime, I've been reading through the forums, and have found that a couple of people have installed 1.7 on enough computers as to get themselves locked out. While Zilmar fixed this issue for them, they had to wait several days before Zilmar wasn't busy to fix it.

My question:
How many installs do I get? I have been known to routinely wipe out XP and reinstall. I also have 2 computers, 1 desktop and 1 laptop, and may be getting another one sometime in the future.
Also, is there any way to uninstall or deactivate 1.7 when I'm done to keep from ever needing Zilmar to unban me? Like, say I go to a friend's house, and I don't have my computer, but we want to play mario kart. After I install 1.7 and we play, is there a way I can not only uninstall it from his computer so as to not be leaking it, but to also let the server know that I'm not leaking it? It would be nice to be able to not worry about "authentication" issues.

Thanks for all your help!

-Emmett

Contact me by PM, we can work something out :)
Note to zilmar: I AM NOT being malicious. I am seriously just doing it to help this person out. Honestly.
Icono can do the same as I got a lil something...

Yes. PM me.

PM sent, although I think I'll be fine. I don't want to do anything malicious. I was just wondering about the install count, so if I am getting close I can contact everyone ahead of time so I don't have to wait for everyone to be unbusy. You know, like if I'm allowed 3 installs, and I've just used 2 for my home computers but I'm getting ready to re-install xp in a couple of weeks: I could just let the admin know in advance so everything runs smoothly. The people in the other forums never said how many computers they installed 1.7 on; it could have been a lot in which I should have no worries. But I wanted to make sure.

There is limits as to how many computers you can use it on; the server tracks the IP ranges and computer name. If they go over the threshold: the app is useless.

It's a waste really: revising so much all for incomplete security, that is bound to see less completeness in the end as consequence (e.g. provoking experienced cracks)
It boils down to arrogance attacking arrogance, a funny key behind all who define hypocrisy.

There is no patch for this as well that you can find for those who need to go through that situation? I imagine it's probably much to try, to safely remove interaction with the server along with many adjustments.

He will continue confining judgments.
This genius won't be experiencing a change of mind, so the question dissolves only as to whether he can do anything about it.
Is that approach so wrong? It's not like Nintendo approved of this form of "competition", an emulator.

All he does right now is cause suffering. Well, now you can emulate zilmar's opposite.

No.

A generic patch is impossible: the approach makes it like that.
A API hook loader with code injection is the best approach.

So when there is interlacing (meaning like security parts tie another) it is better to add code than to edit it?

The specific issue here I understand won't be important until a point where he actually could exceed the IP count.

...read more into shit like how UPX and other packers work.
Then you will see why I had to do it the way I did when inlining. Instead of DigitalSpider's lameass attempt.

And yes, I called him a lamer for doing those lame unpacks and repacking in ACProtect. Does the douche REALLY think that will stop people?

Keeping a protector intact and working, while still removing InternetOpenA functionality is much more elegant and skillful then using the ESP trick to trace to OEP and unpacking.

Thats the bottom line. >.>

I was trying to learn from a question on that.

knew why you did the patch

Well, for that...

Its best doing it that way since its purely generic. No matter what version, the protection is useless.

That method patches directly the API using a trampoline function. However, since Detours is commercial now, a x64 version for Win7 X64 and Vista x64 is impossible.

I suppose if I were to keep the exe from accessing the internet completely, then the server couldn't keep any count on how many computers I've installed it on, right?

....that more or less defines what the 2 methods do. They kill PJ64's Internet access while keeping other app's Net access alive.

That is the Achilles heel, as you so put it.

A trampoline function? I donated a long time ago but this forum is new to me I guess since I only have one post on it. For some reason I can't use the emulation as well.

I'd say you could just run pj 64 inside of sandboxie. (sandboxie.net) If you look through the sandboxie settings, you can complete disable internet access for programs.

Since I'm using wireless I've got a toolbar icon I can just go through to disable my connection from this or that network, so I can shut off everything like snap.

I haven't ever needed it though, since I have never got this error before, with the exception of those terrible early betas.

For those not informed in multiple threads, mudlord as of recent notice will no longer be visiting here.

If you still need related problems fixed, PM either zilmar or myself.
Preferably zilmar if you want to uh stay safe, but you may have to wait quite a bit.
