View Full Version : Question About Downloading ROMs

5th September 2009, 03:10 PM
No, this isn't where to download them. I know that is against Project64's rules.

Why are there different versions of the same ROM? We have:

Verified Good Dump ([!])
Alternate ([a])
Hack ([h])
Pirate ([p])
Trained ([t])
Overdump ([o])
Bad Dump ([b])

Bad dumps, alternate dumps, and over dumps should just go if we have verified good dumps!

They might still be available for history or comparison. If someone already has such "copies", someone else will need it as well to trace things if there should be a problem.
Just the fact that they exist to still be able to find them might have something in store for research.

Well if it is for history purposes, why not have those bad ROMs in a different section entirely instead of with good ROMs? Without looking carefully, people could get screwed with a bad ROM.

One section for:
-Verified good dumps and pirate dumps
--Licensed Game ROMs
--Unlicensed Game ROMs
-Alternate (whatever that means), hack, and trained
-Overdumps and bad dumps

Make sure you specify this request to each of the thousands of seeders :)

They probably thought it was most efficient to keep sections based on the games, since having new sections for hacked or other versions of the uploads would double or triple the number of archives.

Since even hacked versions share similar data to clean copies, it is most efficient to bundle them in the same archive if they are to be given.

People get screwed with a bad ROM if they download and use it mistakenly. If multiple versions are given, including clean copies versus bad dumps, hacks, etc., they can be told apart.

There are also sites that only provide a single image when downloading a game, which may be hacked. That is their own problem to address.
