I know how you feel. I personally would like to donate if there were regular updates to the beta, but I've been told that this isn't the case.

Still, we can't complain...there is a "free" version after all.

Okay:

You are not paying for the emulator. You are donating to the cause, and as a gesture of goodwill since you are donating to the emulator, you are allowed to see beta versions that the team develops. Which is fair, since you are offering monetary relief to the project, since the programmers do this entirely in their spare time, and its not for profit.

I honestly don't see how this relates to the shareware concept at all. Beta or alpha software is definitely not released as shareware (who in their right mind will release software that is extremely buggy?), so I dunno why people keep making parallels as such.

Sorry for ranting, its just I am sick and tired of people saying things that ain't true.

I paid the $20 and have tested out 1.7 ... I did this because I want to encourage the team to continue on.

I use 1.6 usually. It seems more stable on my Vista laptop and runs my faves fairly well. If your only reason for contributing $20 is to run a 'better' version of PJ64 you will be disappointed. On the other hand, if you want to encourage a future release you should contribute the $20 IMHO.

Well, why not post videos on youtube? Just play random games and people can pick out the glitches and bugs for you (well, anything thats not obvious)! What I would like to see is videos here or youtube showing the updates. any way going OoT (out of topic). Good luck, and I do hope the public open version of 1.7.0.49 is free

Hyperchicken
2nd November 2008, 09:38 AM
that simply isnt the same... the best one could do with youtube videos is pick out the obvious bugs (goldeneye sky for example). i dont think making a video of an error message popping up is much help either.

As said before, you donate to support and encourage the developers, and in return the developers give you access to developer builds. Version 1.7 should still be considered unreleased.

I think speaking like that is really immature, and a 14 yo shouldn't be talking like a 9 yo.
I have a very little experience with programming, and I can only imagine how difficult it is to write an emulator, let alone one that has to emulate something as advanced and complex like the N64 architecture, with custom dedicated sound and video chips and memory and all of that.
It's a big effort , you need to know exactly how the machine you want to emulate works in every little detail, and how the platform you are using works as well,it takes a guy years of work, but the result is enjoyable by many.
I've donated several times to other homebrew programmers, and it wasn't always for an emulator, but even small application that you end up using everyday and make your life so much easier deserve to be encoraged and maybe improved upon.
How many good emulators were really promising and exciting but then the project was suddenly stopped because the authors lost interest or just couldn't keep up with the enormous work anymore ?
Remember programmers are normal people like me and you, only much busier ! They have their life too, some are married with childrens to feed and have a 'daytime job' in order to survive.
Their work in the emulation scene is generated by pure love and maybe nostalgia, but once they loose interest in something, it's hard to get it back.
That's why I think it's important to show our support.
Sure a 'Thank you " is most often appreciated and supportive, but how many people remember even how to do that in the first place ? There are too many leechers out there who just grab whatever they want without many compliments.
Then there is people who are willing to fork out a few $$ in exchange for something, like they feel entitled to it because they ' pay ".
It's a smart move from some developers to make use of donation, because anyway it's an incentive to donate for people who normally wouldn't, but it's hardly the point, or the reason.
I am so happy that PJ64 is kept alive and is still being worked on, too many times I've been disappointed with others in the past.
The point is you show your appreciation and support by making a small donation, and in return they show you their appreciation by giving you access to beta builds not meant for public release, which might work better or worse, but certainly have more features added to them from time to time and certainly are less stable then the last public release.
So go ahead and play with that, the last public release. But even so I would encourage people to make a mall donation or at least to pop up in the forums every once in a while and show some interest, otherwise how would such a huge project be kept alive ?

Still, I doubt its done properly. Seeing from past "releases" (scene releases would be nuked if they were the current cracked PJ64 beta's quality ), I doubt they even know how to chase magic bytes..:p

The question should be: Why not pay? You see everyone who doesn't pay should have paid already because they are missing out in all the excitement over the official beta releases!!!

rswedlow
17th November 2008, 04:23 AM
Obviously that does link to the motive of development support. Although the betas technically aren't official, and some of the nature of beta experimentalism isn't exciting...but it's exciting to be able to change a project you respect. I would donate solely for that reason; that's a true donation. I'm not saying I would decline if beta access were optional on donating; few people would decline beta access in this area methinks :P...maybe more than zilmar suspects.

Mdkcheatz
17th November 2008, 04:43 AM
People declining the privilege to use the beta releases? unheard of my friend!! rofl

When I said official releases I meant OFFICIAL RELEASES!!!!!!!!!!!! perhaps you misunderstood the reference to what I consider official sir iconoclast. you see, anything released by the authors are official, and anything leaked and hacked and such are not official. Hence i stick to what i said.

Anyway, I mean its a grey area and purely opinionated based, but personally I've enjoyed testing and beating the s*** out of me computer over stupid bugs in the beta releases and repetitively doing so over new bugs.

And donating $20.00 USD just for the sake of donating is definitely admirable, but I could easily top that by taking out life insurance with Zilmar as the beneficiary, pay the premiums for 2 years and then commit s******, causing the insurance policy *** clause to expire forcing the insurance company to pay the full contracted sum to the beneficiary.... easy $100,000 donation and iconoclast get trampled in shame BOOYAA!

rswedlow
17th November 2008, 04:51 AM
That would be quite ze pwnz0rment. :)

As I said technically in a 'multiperspective' sense to match that this is as you said to opinion: [Technically] the only official releases are these.
http://www.pj64-emu.com/downloads/project64/binaries/

People who would decline beta access and make a simple donation is like the number of college students it takes to change a lightbulb: It could vary quite a bit. :)

Mdkcheatz
17th November 2008, 04:54 AM
well consider this though: I mean wouldn't those 1.6 and below binaries jus be Official "public" releases, whereas the beta 1.7's and alpha's be Official Beta releases for donator's only....?

[EDIT]

Depends what college your talking about! At Haaaaaararavard it would probably take half the school because they'd go into their little shells and devise a plan to generate a self creating virtual reality in reality crazy thinga ma bob blah blah blahhh skirbloop that works without even touching it, therefore you can look at it two ways, either it takes too many people or no people, but never mind me, im jus busting your clast...

The question should be: Why not pay?

Lets see.......

* To some people, emulators MUST be free. Donations or shareware are frowned upon by some. Thus, they have no moral qualms acquiring it by other means.
* To some people, open source is the ONLY answer. Again, things must be "free", but in the philosophical sense.

So I also see reasons why people feel they shouldn't donate, even though donating is a super kind gesture :). After all, zilmar juggles his work projects with PJ64 and other things. Same with Jabo. And Gent. And Smiff......

mudlord's got the experience...I'd not have thought the truth would hit so well.

Iconoclast Zil deffinitely just downright crushed you dreams of pownage... how do you feel now:rolleyes:

Wha- no zilmar pwned U. You could have argued,
official = accepted

And that when someone who requested alpha access downloads an alpha, he accepts the download, and it's official. It's also official because it was released for them, but it is not official in general because the general public is not allowed to see the alphas for a reason: They're supposedly very unstable plans for beta releases. The betas are already mid-next-version development with buggy effects planned ahead (as you've obviously seen by now in just the cheats system), so they aren't for the public either. So you see 'official' requires a subject audience to apply to.

haha iconoclast, is personally think that whether it is official or not doesn't really matter, hehe, you of all people known I would've seized upon the opportunity to argue hehem but I can't help but feel as though arguing over something purely opinion based is like swimming in the never ending ocean...

rswedlow
17th November 2008, 05:06 PM
It's not physically impossible for a little kid to pay, and it's not physically impossible for them to not complain about it.

Official without specification is: general, and if they are generally official "accepted" that means they are just that in all contexts--including official releases to the general public. Therefore it matters in that a whole bunch of newbies are using a beta version--not a generally official version--and getting exception messages all the time. Once those are gone it may potentially be time for an official release. Must I italicize "general"?

Mdkcheatz
17th November 2008, 05:14 PM

I know how hard is to create or update an emulator it costs a lot of money..
But i am only 14 yers old and i donīt have money to donate to have 1.7 project i think it is a bit unfair.....Iīm not saying that the only way to is unfair but if you of persons with my age that donīt have money to buy it??
If my father donate it i would donate three times for me for my sister and for my friend but the question is that i donīt have it

well I personally would use that argument for more than one reason... if you want to go by the fact that your only 14 then someone like me could easily counter argue that if your only 14 then perhaps testing (and testing is all it is) the beta releases is someone perhaps too advanced for you and therefore you should stick to the stable 1.6 release....

Which feeds my next argument that there is version 1.6 which is offered 100 percent free and open to the public. 1.6 for the most part works great as it is so it's not like the author's are forcing people to donate in order to even get any pj64 copy.... keep in mind that the beta releases are very unstable most times and releasing them to donated members is just so that they may "test" them and even help where needed...

hrm that was a very interesting read on an epic scale.

I loved all the aspects discussed and analysed.

Of course donators are donating and not paying, that we have established without a shadow of a doubt.

Members who donated: have access to beta releases of plugins, exe and files.

Members who donated: have the chance to interact in the progression of Project64's outcome in ways they never have in past beta programs.

Of course as Zil has already stated active beta members who show true commitment to beta reports and testing can also request/nominate themselves to alpha releases to really get into the thick of it all.

I would also like to invite any Beta Members who are interested in Cheat Creation to jump in and start creating codes for the 1.7 cheat support just like Mdkcheatz has and i will be posting a thread in the cheats section about this.

Well, where should I start, how about I start by pointing out that in the past, if your N64 failed or broke, you would have to buy a new one to play your games. In addition, I believe that if you enjoy something, and someone spends their time on it, they should probably get some form of payment for the time that they have spent, after all, I highly doubt that all their time that they spend of this is all fun and games. So here are you options, wait tell 2010 when 1.7 will probably be publically released, buy a N64 power supply off of EBay, or pay the give project 64 a small donation so that they well be encouraged to continue doing what they currently are, and in return, they might feel like it is worth their time to take the time to make their beta projects available to you. Therefore, if life is going to teach you one thing, it will probably be that for every action you make, there will be results, and they usually are not free (whether the payment be your time or your money, that depends on the situation).
