Mario Kart 64--How to get past "The End" screen to play Extra (mirror) races?

So I've beaten the game on 150CC and I'm at the 'The End' screen which requires a restart. Well, if I save the game it just keeps going back to this point, and if I reset the game then the save doesn't load. I'm stuck for ideas...I tried Googling how to do this but couldn't come up with anything. Anyone know what to do?

Iirc I unlocked Extra engine mode (and now that you refresh me mirrored races) by getting a gold trophy on the four cup races (Mushroom, Flower, Star, and Special Cup). While you're in the select screen for worlds there should be a way to get the game to display whether you got a Gold, Silver, or Bronze trophy.

If you did not place first on one of those cups then replay to place first.
