View Full Version : Banjo Tooie problem (Turbo mode?)

I'm near the end of the game but I'm stuck on the clockwork mouse race on Cloud Cuckooland. I'm finding it really difficult to complete, so I was wondering if their are any controller plugins that support some kind of turbo mode that allows me to win the race without breaking my keyboard (as you have to tap A repeatedly to win the race).

Flick to 06:53 in this video to see what I'm referring to.

Thanks in advance.

Hah I know what you mean. This game and this jigsaw piece is the reason my folks got us our first MadCatz controller with turbo support. This is one of the things that remind me that I'm emulating.

If you installed Project64 1.6 it should have come with N-Rage's DirectInput controller plug-in. To switch to this plug-in:

From the menu "Options" choose "Settings...".
Change "Input (controller) plugin" to "N-Rage`s DirectInput8 V2 1.82".

Configure for turbo support as follows:

From the menu "Options" choose "Configure Controller Plugin...".
Switch from the "Controls" sub tab to that for "Modifiers".
Click "New Modifier" button.
Select the new modifier entry in the list, and change the "Mod Type" value (see right for config) to "Macro".
Click the "Rapid Fire" button, and check at least one of the check boxes for their controller functions (e.g. one for A button to simulate turbo signal for pressing A).
At the top of the "Adjust Modifier" controls is a button labeled "Assign Mod". Whatever key (if you use a keyboard like I do) you set here will trigger the turbo function as you have set. Be careful not to move your mouse while setting this because that can also answer the field lol.
Before closing the configuration be sure you press both "Apply Changes" and then "Save", or your changes here are reset.

The following is my example that is set up so that when I press and hold "W" on my keyboard, it rapidly sends the signal of the A button in repeat.

I didn't use keys that were adjacent to "A" on my keyboard (which I have set to the A button) because they were all already in use. (I use Q and R for the left and right triggers.)

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, I tried what you said and it hasn't helped. Sadly, it doesn't seem to have any effect on the race.

Have you tried this method yourself? (Just out of curiosity to see if it genuinely works with the game). Granted, the controller plugin that I'm using isn't N-Rage`s DirectInput8 V2 1.82 but N-Rage's DirectInput8 V2 1.80a.

Do you think it's worth testing this method with the exact same plugin you recommended?

I suppose the only other option is that I post my save file and hope some kind person with a controller that has a turbo mode built in it finishes the race for me, saves over the file and re-uploads the save file.

I've also tested this method with Nrage's Input plugin 2 1.83 and it hasn't worked.

Here is a screenshot of the settings that I have configured to. I thought I should post them just to make sure I'm doing everything correctly.

Actually thanks for pointing this out.
If you were to test by watching Banjo jump as well, sometimes holding E (or W in my setup case) does have bear and bird jump and flap just a few times, only once, or even do nothing at all.

It looks like the problem is that updating is actually too frequent.

Try also the "Slow Rapid Fire (Paper Mario, etc." option.
Then click "Apply Changes" and then "Save".

This option is not need for quickly pumping bombs in Bomberman 64, but I didn't really test Banjo-Tooie.

I don't happen to have a save state on me at the time conveniently setting me in Cloud Cuckooland ready to race again, and even though I have found this to help, if I am wrong about this helping you again I am very sorry and will work my way up to finding Canary Mary to test myself.

Wow, the slow rapid fire mode actually worked. Thanks a lot for your help.

*Goes back to playing Banjo Tooie.*
