Pff. Crap.

Spybot or AVG.

Yes, Microsoft Security Essentials is crap and should not be used to truly check for viruses or spyware.

AVG is okay I suppose (haven't tested recent versions, definitely not any retail versions) but I prefer Avira Antivirus (free personal version) and Avast Antivirus (free home edition) though i still have no idea of what the "best" antivirus would be, free or otherwise.

For spyware scanning and prevention, I use Spybot S&D and their immunization lists (Note: DO NOT USE IMMUNIZATION LISTS WITH XP AND IE8 causes major slowdown of entire OS )

For spyware prevention alone, I use Spywareblaster and their blocking lists along with spybot's (Note: Spywareblaster causes the same issue as spybot's immunization lists)

For firewall protection, use COMODO (free version) or Zonealarm (free version) with COMODO being the superior of the two. (Note: don't use COMODO's secure DNS servers unless you use GRC's DNS benchmark and confirm that they are closer to you)

Besides these, just general good browsing habits will keep you safe.

For instance, don't click random ads saying you won some s*** that you never entered for, never browse for free stuff unless you already know its free and safe to begin with, don't browse for porn, don't open emails from people you don't know, don't go looking for a cracked version of project 64 1.7, and that's mostly it ;)

Oh, and use ANY other browser than internet explorer, your internet experience will be MUCH better :D

Aaaaannnnd enough going off topic, moving on...

Well this thread's topic was already solved on like, page 1. A new thread could have been started for this new set of issues long ago in theory. =D
Up to Witten I guess. :D

And blah, I have Kaspersky, but my system has gotten so damn slow. I don't know if I just need to wait for it to defragment, free more HDD space, whatever, taking so long though. The piece of crap keeps freezing.

dsx_ 1st April 2011 08:43 AM

Witten should close threads like this one, not ones that aren't actually going off topic. e.g. http://forum.pj64-emu.com/showthread.php?p=26988 and if legit posts like icono's last one are considered spam, might as well not even post about Project64 then.

Natch 1st April 2011 02:41 PM

Heh, it sounds like Iconoclast needs to do some serious defragmenting XD And use CCleaner.

HatCat 1st April 2011 04:30 PM

I just finished a defragment over 2 days, though it was still slow as hell during that process. Though now that it's done ironically I don't think I've stumbled on any more slowness.

And I don't know what CCleaner is, but all this talk about virus scanners kind of pisses me off. They're all viruses themselves to me as far as I'm concerned; I just don't wander off to sites and click bad links. Could also be my fault my parents tried to raise me with a bunch of overtly pathetic web filtering security controls that would even block some TXT text pages as unsafe. Not saying that stuff like Kaspersky or what I have installed is useless, just sick of bitches using the subject of virus scanners they have or others as an excuse to file false complaints.

And dsx! XD I know right. Though that thread shouldn't have been bumped to begin with. Well he's handling stuff better than RadeonUser is, who would just savagely close a bunch of threads without saying anything just because I was the last one to post in them. :D
