a question about goldeneye 007

I have started playing Goldeneye 007. The cheats in the PJ64 cheat box don't work but the ones in the game it self work Why is this? Also I have found that there is no way to save were I am at in the game. I end up having to start over from the beginning. The save cmd in PJ64's system pull down menu does nothing.
