Maybe you should try going just to nethack.org ?

Failing that, you can always download a pre-compiled binary of the MS-DOS build and run it under DOSBox.
My compilation of it is a few months old and is for Unix target. If I did the GTK/Linux build I was afraid it would give me a GUI.
