Help Me

I just started playing majoras mask and im trying to give a guy a moon tear and i get to the item menu to select stuff, but i cant figure out how to get to it. ive tried so many things and it just keeps highlighting the z and r tabs to go to the next section of the start menu.When i press any button it just takes me to the next menu. Im using a usb xbox 360 controller
