SM64 Multiplayer Problem

Both me and my friend can connect to my server, so we got that thing going for us. But the problem is that he can't control himself , and when we setup the controls for Player 2 I control both of the players.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Did you set up both controllers or did he configure his controller.
N-rage locks on the device that inputs the keys and may have applied the configuration incorrectly.
