If you like those kinds of filters I've got more where that came from. Well, that came from different source, similar collection, but I have a larger collection.

Oh yes, certainly I can tell the neon effect radiates more awesomely with the desktop shortcuts moved to the border. I really like the high-contrast neon stuff for night hours; I'm thinking about trying that background out for when I start using wallpaper again heh.

Pretty much everything except Photoshop. When I was like, 13, and in school about picture design I used to retain the interest of layer and blending effects to produce complex artwork, but the closest thing I've ever done to that as of more recent years is Flash Professional image export.

I think the best software to describe what I do is ArtIcons Pro. Most of the time I use color channel algebra, pixel geometry, and pixel group shifting to construct or rearrange, in the case of existing canvas-relative alignment or other imperfections, my own pixel maps, rather than relying on drawing applications to create effects for me. I've also used the ROM hacking tool N64GFX, which converts N64 16- or 32-bit bitmaps to PNG or vice versa, so sometimes I create PNG images using hexadecimal or N64 textures using PNG. :/

I have Paint.NET, too. I've needed something like that for changing degrees of PNG compression and unique RGBA resizing algorithms. I needed it for the new image format that Jabo's retexturing plugin uses. However Squall should keep in mind that file size is not automatically an indicator of superior bitmap optimization except with download times. :P

For palette editing and counting colors, I use Jasc Paint Shop Pro. It's the closest thing to Photoshop that I have but with a much better list of file formats and formatting techniques to choose from than Photoshop has ever had. Photoshop is great for click-and-pick artists but creates several illusions of perfection.

If I could get GIMP easily I'd have that as well; I noticed it has a slider scale for specific degrees of PNG compression. I don't know much about it, but I hear it's a great alternative to both Jasc and Adobe image software.

Seems jahra!n's design of the new logo is a perfect example of what I mean about Photoshop.

JPEG formatting didn't do most of the damage there.
Taking the original PNG resource linked by zilmar, force the alpha channel to 255:255 for every pixel, then it looks like this.

I don't know what the hell happened at the top-right, but it wasn't JPEG. However, the solidity instead of blending everywhere else indicates correct anti-aliasing. The jaggedness of the same color after forcing opacity to full indicates that PS did the AA correctly in those places. The top edge of the 'P', though, is a counterexample.

I liked this version better. :P

Most incorrect AA is set to black pixels, so just merge the background with black. The canvas dimensions and pixels alignment are fixed, too.
