Default is there any way to fix depth errors without glide?

i'm using build and it doesn't play nice with any release of glide and its wrappers i've thrown at it (crashes on boot without fail). with jabo's d3d8 it's almost perfect, however, excepting the nagging issue of depth errors in 2d particle effects -- specifically lens flares. is there any way to configure jabo's around this? should i look into other plugins? other pj64 builds plus glide?

timing is often a problem with other builds, including 1.6. the timing in the 1.7 beta i'm using seems virtually perfect, though maybe i haven't played the right games to see otherwise. naturally, i use dk64's dk rap to gauge timing accuracy
