Load the state with missing sound.
Go into settings (Ctrl+T) and click on Config: (game name)
Check "Fixed Audio Timing" Ok

Now load the state, suddenly there is sound but another problem... timing, for me the timing is going at 120 VI/s.. too fast. From here save a new state. Go back to the config and uncheck Fixed audio timing. Now load the state.
Ta da.
I also made an account just to thank you for this simple instruction that got me out of jail. Was quite frustrated when this problem arose. CHEERS!

Wait. You got out of jail by using a checkbox in Project64's config?
