Unhappy Analog direction accuracy problem

So I recently bought a usb n64 controller so that it felt more natural when playing n64 games. Though unfortunately it seems pretty uncomfortable when I play due to the emulator only reading 8 input directions from my controller, which are up/down, left/right and the diagonals. There's no in between. For example in banjo kazooie I was attempting to walk across a bridge that was on an angle that was directly straight or diagonal. Due to the lack of range i kept falling off due to not being able to make more micro adjustments to the direction I was walking and it was very frustrating.

I tried checking the controllers inputs on windows and the analog stick definitely is able to do far more than just up/down/left/right and diagonals. I'm just wondering if there is a way to properly emulate the accuracy of the analog stick how its meant to.
