Default Fatal error message running SM64 Star Road

Hi there!

I'm (re)playing Super Mario 64: Star Road right now (wonderful game, btw). Problem is I'm having an issue... Let's describe what happens as comprehensive as I can.

First of all, I use Windows 10 (64bit) and Project 64 My version of Super Mario 64: Star Road is the one downloaded in the official video, and there wasn't any buggy or glitchy thing during patching.

Be that as it may, what happens is I cannot enter into a wood jail behind the pipe you start the game. In order to enter, I need an invisible cap. When I get one and I go there, it crashes in the moment I enter. I see there is a rabbit and thus a possible star, so I need to solve the problem.

Which is the crash exactly? Game freezes (except soundtrack, which is looping correctly) and a message pops up saying “Fatal Error: Stopping Emulation”.

Since I've googled a little, I've found interesting solutions that did NOT work. Namely:

1) Run as adminsitrator and/or set compatibility mode to Windows 7. Didn't work.

2) Change plugins. Didn't work.

3) Play in windowed mode. Didn't work.

4) Change CPU core style to Interpret. Didn't work.

5) Disable Protect Memory option and enable Start Changed option. Didn't work.

If this were useful, my PC configuration is as follows:

Windows 10 Home 64-bit
AMD Phenom II X4 955
4,00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 669MHz
Gigabyte GA-790XTA-UD4 (Socket M2)
1024MB ATI AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series
Thanks everyone for helping

Are you running PJ with the correct RDB entries? Has anyone tried using PJ64 2.3?
Book recommendation!

I've come across this in PJ64 2.3 today. Actually just found this when I googled for it a few moments ago. Exact same scenario, got the vanish cap, entered the area next to the start of the game and to 3 fatal errors then emulation stopped.

Talking Solution

I've figured it out! Sorry for reviving this sleeping thread, but I want to make sure this information is out there. Project64, Windows 10 64-bit.

CPU core style: Interpreter
Function lookup method: Virtual lookup table
32-bit engine disabled

Not sure if these settings matter, but it's what I was using before I got MIPS. I would still crash when trying to go through the cage, but not when butt-sliding, so I ran around the back of the cage and slid from the slope into the cage. From there you can grab MIPS and leave safely.

Interestingly, it didn't crash after that, even after I reverted my settings. Maybe it has something to do with the presence of MIPS.
