MarioKart64 Cant Use items

The game seems to work perfectly in project64, however in multiplayer the ability to use items randomly stops working and I get stuck with the same unusable item until the next race, where it happens again. Sometimes it happens on the first item pickup and sometimes wont happen at all. Any ideas how to fix? im running project64 on windows 7
