Default Mario Kart 64 - is there a code to enable music in 3- and 4 player mode?

As many of you already know, there came a gamefix aka cheat code a while ago that finally solved the speed issues in VS-mode in Mario Kart 64. Now me and my friends could finally play all the 4 Balloon Battle Arenas without two of the arenas running insanely fast, as the case also was with the DK Jungle level.

The Nintendo 64 wasn't a very powerful console, and in this game compromises were seen when choosing 3- or 4 players. Gone was the Mario GP mode, and our only options was VS-mode and Balloon Battle. Unfortunately the in-game music did not make it in 3- and 4 player mode, my guess is that the good 'ol N64 could not handle the music as well as having 3- or 4 players in-game at once.

Something tells me that there might be a simple on and off switch in Mario Kart 64 when it comes to enabling or disabling the in-game music in 3- or 4 player mode. If it can be enabled via a cheat code or if you would need to change some code in the rom via hex-edit, I don't know. Our gaming systems are more than capable running this old game with music enabled in 3- and 4 player mode, but have any of you more experienced users ever looked this up, or having any idea if this can be done without much hassle?

Hmm, still not working, am I doing something wrong?

Here's Mario Kart 64 U! from the Project64.rdf file when modified:

[3E5055B6-2E92DA52-C:45]
Good Name=Mario Kart 64 (U)
Internal Name=MARIOKART64
Status=Compatible
Cheat0=81001A38 2409,81001A3A 0002,81001A3C 2409,81001A3E 0002,81001C90 240A,81001C92 0002,81001C94 240A,81001C96 0002 //Multiplayer timing fix
Cheat1=8128EC9C 240E,8128EC9E 0001,8128F9C4 2409,8128F9C6 0001 //Music 4 player mode
Plugin Note=[video] (see GameFAQ)
Culling=1
Primary Frame Buffer=1

In the Cheat1 line I copy/pasted the cheat from the previous post (Cheat0 is multiplayer timing fix).

I am running the right rom; I can trace back the initials from the CRC1 and CRC2 code on the game-rom to this entry in Project64.rdb

Thumbs up It's working

Nevermind; somehow there were no music when I first applied the GameShark Codes, but now it's suddenly working like a charm!!!

Mario Kart 64 just got a lot better; it's almost in a "complete" state now (just read about a hack under development for Mario Kart 64 from the guy mentioned in the post above mine, abitalive. He's planning on adding VS CPU on future builds. That's dedication).

AFAIK doesn't the L-trigger on the controller toggle between the volume levels? I know in GP it does.

I don't know that hitting the L button two or three times to mute it actually turns off audio command lists and frees up CPU reserves on the system though.

The L-trigger toggles the music on or off only in 1- and 2 player mode. It has no function originally in 3- or 4 player mode, unless you use the MP Music On code. I have no idea why Nintendo disabled the music in 3- and 4 player mode.

I also use a code (did not list it here in my config) where the L-trigger can't be used to disable the music in-game. The reason being it's too easy to accidentally hit that button in a multiplayer session in my opinion.

For people who have had trouble getting this code to work, I have tweaked the code to only run at the beginning of a course. That should solve any crashes people might have had.
