After trying out the latest builds, I've been wondering if there's a good reason to not just leave every game at CF=1.

Some games don't work on CF=1. Other games might work better with a higher CF. Generally though, I think CF=1 is good.

The person long ago who decided that using CF=1 with Perfect Dark was a good idea needs a stern talking to.

CF = Clear Frame ?

in that case for Perfect Dark CF should be in 2 according to the documentation.

What CF would you suggest for that game?

yes, read the documentation.

"Counter Factor"

Possible settings:
1. * use default (2)
2. 1
3. 2
4. 3
5. 4
6. 5
7. 6

• default setting: * use default (2)
• generally recommended setting: 1 or 2 (possibly 3, see below)

Counter Factor effects the timing in the core, it's a difficult option to explain, what you need to know is that 2 is the default and best speed you can get in most games without causing problems like missing video frames, 1 is required by some games to prevent flicker or optionally to increase smoothness, and 3 is a possibility for some games to improve performance. Values higher than 3 are likely to cause severe frame loss, leading to instability. But in the hands of experienced users this setting can be used as a crude form of frame-skip. Experienced users only!

CF=2 is the best balance for Perfect Dark, but some set the game to CF=1 to get framerates between 40-60fps. The trade-off is music bugs, incorrect game speed, slow-motion not working, etc. IMO, it is unacceptable for games to run at a different speed to a real console. Higher framerates are fine so long as game speed doesn't change.

A few games need the Clear Frame setting on 1 or 2. But only Jabo's 1.6.1 saves the setting.

So maybe 1.6.1 should be included with PJ64 2.2. 40 winks needs 1.6.1 to display correctly too, 1.7 messes up the title gfx, and some textures are missing.

And maybe the goodname's should be written to the 1.6 rdb in root folder. Screenshots miss the goodname using 1.6 plugins. If you add the Good Name to the 1.6 rdb manually, the screenshots have the good name. One strange thing I noticed is Jabo's 1.7 screenshots are 50kb at 640x480, and 1.6.1 are approx 130kb.

Porting over the ROM browser with boxart support from
http://forums.cen64.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=15 and
http://www.emutalk.net/threads/54976-Mupen64Plus-Qt would be a nice to have feature.
